Themed Vocabulary

Themed vocabulary sections cover all key areas of the curriculum and support the development of complex vocabulary acquisition. Each provides a diverse selection of tasks and challenges which are rooted in the types of questions children can expect to encounter in both KS2 and 11+ papers.

Word Games

Word games, such as Words within Words, Adding and Taking Letters and Playing with Words, are an excellent way of helping students expand their vocabulary and this selection of games, many of them original, will provide parents with a wealth of ideas which they can use with their children to make preparation for KS2 and 11+ fun. The second half of the book focuses on the skills and understanding needed for success in English and Verbal Reasoning papers. It covers all key terms and skills children will encounter in English tests and the vocabulary they will need to access Verbal Reasoning questions. The tasks mirror GL and CEM tasks, including synonyms, antonyms, homographs, prefixes and root words, word relationships, cloze passages, shuffle activities and missing word questions. There is a specific focus on the importance of context to an understanding of vocabulary.

The Essential 11+ Verbal Reasoning Study & Practice Book for GL Assessment

This book provides a comprehensive guide to GL Verbal Reasoning question types.

These are common types of 11+ tasks, which are used by many local authorities and schools to test suitability for selective education. The tasks and guidance in this book are suitable for Year 5 – 6 children preparing for 11+ exams, or Year 4 children working above expected progress for their age.

Question Types

Each question type is explained, with tips and examples. For each type, there is a skills section which helps develop understanding of how to approach these questions, followed by Multiple choice and Open answer questions. Finally, there is a challenge,

or Extension section which offers tougher questions. Overall, the book contains

over 460 skills practice questions.

Focus on Families

GL questions are split into types, but there are many links between these. Understanding how questions test the same skills will help children tackle multiple questions by enabling them to transfer understanding of one task to another.

The Focus on Families section explains these links clearly and suggests games and activities to reinforce understanding.
